This project is about creating a dashboard that monitors the amount of time I spend on my phone. Let's face it! We all addicted to our phone and an average time we spend on our phone is about 5 hours daily, not including work-related smartphone use. That is almost 35 hours a week, which is basically a full time job!

Time and energy we spend on our phone could be given to something else such as friends or families. Nevertheless, our phones are amazing tools and we just need to be cognitive and know how much time we are spending with them and that is the purpose of this project.

Objectives
  • How many hours am I spending on my phone every day?

  • What social media is affecting my screen time?

  • Is there a day of the week that I use my phone more than others?

  • How many times a day do I pick up my phone?

Collecting Data

I used My Screen Time feature in my iPhone Setting weekly report and created Excel Sheet with the following fields. The data has been gathered from June 26, 2022 to July 22, 2022 for 4 weeks. The data shows average weekly numbers.

  • Date: The starting date of the week.

  • Week #: The number of the week in year 2022.

  • Total Screen Time: Indicated in the setting.

  • 11 Most used Apps with the total hours, including: Safari, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Telegram, Facebook, Indeed, CTV News, Mail, Medium Magazine and Fitness.

  • Total Pickups: Weekly average number of times I picked up my phone.

  • Most Pickups: The days of the week I mostly picked up my phone.

  • Notifications: Weekly average number of notifications

We are going to use descriptive analytics to describe the basic features of the data. They provide simple summaries about the sample and the measures. Descriptive statistics are broken down into measures of central tendency and measures of variability (spread).

Now, let's plot line charts to show my screen hours for each App over the past four weeks.

Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that Safari is the App that experienced a steep rise with a 9.9 hours peak in week 26 and then declined sharply to 1.6 hours in week 27 and finally, had a moderate rise to 2.3 hours by the end of the period.

Instagram displayed a more erratic trend with initial figures at 6.0 hours, steadily subsided to 2.9 hours by week 26, a consistent increase to 4.4 hours by week 26 followed by a decrease to finish the period.

LinkedIn fell steadily from 1.9 hours in week 25 to 1.1 hours in week 27, preceding a surge to 3.2 hours in week 27, and steadily subsided to 1.8 hours in the end.

The rest of the Apps screen time remained stable throughout the period.

Let's make some more visualizations:

And Finally, You can check out my Dashboard from Google Data Studio. I found some other insights and patterns and summarized them in a dashboard.

Conclusion
  • On average, I spent almost 3.50 hours on my phone and picked up my phone 66 times on average per day to check notifications or other reasons.

  • I mostly surfed the internet to go from one page to another on the Internet, browsing for topics of interest. I spent nearly 4 hours on average on Safari, mostly reading interview questions and getting myself ready! Instagram and LinkedIn are the most used apps following Safari.

  • It seems I picked up and used my phone mostly on Saturdays, Fridays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with the same ratio. I tend to use my phone at the end of the week! Those days are my favorite days of the week!
